Hold fire on buying the new DOOM

  • about 2 years ago by Jason Magee

Those of you who have pre-ordered or are planning to purchase DOOM shortly should be aware that Bethesda have this week said that they won’t be providing pre-release review copies to the media. Lately this is a good indicator that the game is expected to be negatively received. We suggest giving it as week or so for reviews to trickle out. Bethesda had this to say:

DOOM is comprised of a single-player campaign, online multiplayer, and SnapMap. After discussing, we believe all three elements are important parts of the complete DOOM experience, and are meant to be experienced as part of a complete package. As DOOM’s SnapMap and multiplayer modes both require access to a server that won’t be live prior to launch, review copies will arrive on launch day.

As many of you are probably aware, the multiplayer beta was considered by most to be a bit of a flop, especially on the PC. There was a lot of negativity surrounding the multiplayer’s similarity to Halo and Call of Duty and not the original DOOM.

As a general rule we’d recommend not pre-ordering games fullstop but at the very least recommend not purchasing AAA games that don’t supply the media with review copies.
